The Gardens
Michiel is the lead market Gardner on the farm, he specializes in growing culinary herbs and spices that are sold fresh and are dried, processed and packaged into the Mulligan Gardens line of seasonings.
Mic's love for creating flavor comes from a lifetime love of good food shared and nourished by his best friend, his dad and, his best friend's dad. This same love led him on a path from a Dutch naval/fishing town to the stupid beautiful town of Laytonville in rural northern Mendocino county in the USA.
We have multiple gardens on the property that make up the produce production portion of our farm. It all starts in our propagation house a 16'x80' green house build out of 80% reclaimed materials. this is where all the seed are started and taken care of until they are ready to go to their spot in one of the gardens. the nursery is next to our two high tunnels. this is where we grow our hot crops in the summer and winter crops in the winter. The majority of plants end up in the market garden in 1 of our 24 90' beds, in there they are accompanied by a few perennial herbs like chives, tarragon, and mint. Behind the market garden is the perennial garden which is filled with drought & deer proof hardy herbs including sage, rosemary, thyme, and oregano. our favorite garden is the kitchen garden. virtually everything that is grown in here ends up in our own kitchen. throughout the year the kitchen garden has the most amazing variety of shapes, colors textures and flavors. It is also home to most of the mother plants that provided cutting for the rest of the farm.
All the different departments on our farm create some fantastic waste material that all meet at our compost yard. The animals give us some fantastic manure in all different shapes and sizes( and smells). Ben's mushroom production provides and ample amount of fully inoculated carbon based substrate that bring the fluff to our compost. and the gardens add a healthy amount of nitrogen rich plant material. the result is a steady supply of fantastic compost for the gardens. We have been self sufficient in our compost needs since 2019.
